IP(Intellectual Property or Intellectual Property rights) is a generic term including patents, utility models, designs, trademarks and copyrights etc. and is recognized as an exclusive intangible property right given over mental creations or creative apparatuses/methods (research results) related to industrial activities and the like. IP is divided into two categories:
- Industrial Property Rights (IPR) including patents or utility models for inventions, industrial designs and trademarks/service marks are basically protected by the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (1883).
- Copyrights covering literary works (such as novels, poems and plays), films, music, artistic works (such as drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures) and architectural design are basically protected by the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (1886).
